I didn’t get out much during February with the camera, my time seemed to be focused on getting things ready to go to the Mangawhai Community Market. However, I do have a couple of moments that I want to share with you.
Resting Place
Ever since living here in Northland I have driven by this cemetery and thought what a lovely final resting place. It has sea views and is slightly elevated and the headstones stand proudly remembering those that have gone before. On arrival, I was instantly taken with the shapes and whiteness of the headstones illuminated by the sunlight. My attention was also drawn to the large blackened headstone standing on its own. It served as a nice contrast. I set about creating a composition to include both these elements. My intention was also to use the 10-stop ND filter to get streaky more dramatic clouds, but the clouds remained somewhat elusive. However, I still managed to get some of the effect I was after. I’m interested to go back here in different weather conditions to see what else is possible.
Rock, Sea, Sky
The light this morning down at the beach was very subtle and gentle. I’m coming to really enjoy these sorts of mornings. They calm me and slow me down – which I love! Compositionally, I find this image very restful, essentially it is an image of two halves. Divided diagonally in half from bottom left to top right, the detail of the rock contrasts against the smooth sea, the horizon contrasts against the diagonal rock crease upwards from the bottom right hand corner, the monochrome of the rocks contrasts against the colour in the sea and sky, the rocks are close and the land far. It is a simple image but seems to have a lot going on. Although there is nothing obvious on the left to hold the eye in the composition, I do wonder if the 3 little rocks help to do this, in a subtle way? Either way, this image gives me a sense of calm.
To Market
The final image for the month is a snap shot of the market stall all set up. Given that this took a lot of my time this month, it would be rude not to add this into February’s Monthly Moments.
If you are in Mangawhai come on down to the Mangawhai Community Market and check us out. Be great to see you.
