I recently received the most wonderful positive feedback about my photography which completely made my day. In fact, I bathed in the compliment for a couple of days, said it out loud and shared it with friends. My reaction to the compliment, however, got me thinking about the name I was using for my photography. Did it reflect what I felt, and what I was trying to convey when I created my images? In short, it did not! The only reason it was Sarah K Smith Photography was because I could not think of anything else at the time!
So, spurred on by this wonderful compliment and discussions about the current name with Gerard and a friend, I started playing with ideas, words and concepts. Nothing revealed itself. Luring Gerard into my war with words, we brainstormed. A couple of hours later, nothing was forth coming. Reluctantly, I left it to sleep on.
Revisiting it the next day, again the name remained elusive. You may think I was like a dog with a bone and you would be right. I was determined to find a name that reflected my thoughts and feelings when I photograph. Lamenting to Gerard about how elusive the name was, and that it could take the rest of my life to find one that fitted (oh so, dramatic!), he gave a couple more suggestions, one of which was ... Soul DeLight Photography.
I paused, thought, then smiled. This seemed to fit. It included the word ‘light’ which is a critical element in making every image, and I liked the idea that my images might ‘delight your soul’ as much as they do mine. When in the outdoors, I often feel something in my soul and try to reveal that as I photograph. It’s all very deep I know. I think way too much - Gerard tells me that all the time! But … he had hit the jackpot! I ran the new name past my friend and it got the thumbs up!
Needless to say, Gerard is chuffed that he had the winning suggestion because so many of his previous ones were rejected.
Rest assured the change is in name only and the same quality images will continue to pop up in your news feeds and on my website!
Oh … and the comment that spurred all this deeper thinking: “You show your heart and soul through your lens.”
